Patriots Day & The Boston Marathon

One of the many rites of spring is Upon us! Patriots Day and the Boston Marathon. For those who do not live in Massachusetts and New England, here’s summary of the big day.

Robert Cheruiyot (Kenya) wins #BostonMarathon 2:05:52; Beats the Course record by 83 seconds!

Women: Erkesso nearly went the wrong way! but won in 2:26:09! just about 3 seconds ahead of Pushkareva #bostonmarathon

Patriots Day is Celebrated by Maine and Massachusetts, reflecting on the battles of Lexington and Concord on April 19, 1775. (Shot heard round the world so on and so on.) It is also a public school observance day in Wisconsin. Usually it is observed on the 3rd Monday in April. This month it just happens to fall on the actually anniversary of the Battles.

2008: Monday, April 21
2009: Monday, April 20
2010: Monday, April 19
2011: Monday, April 18
2012: Monday, April 16

So Mark your calenders, because those are also the dates of the Boston Marathon.

“Marathon Monday” as it is known, started in 1897. The first modern-day marathon competition in the 1896 Summer Olympics inspired the organization and running of the race. The Boston Marathon is the world’s oldest annual marathon and ranks as one of the world’s best-known road racing events. It is one of five World Marathon Majors. They also include London, Berlin, Chicago and New York City.

Athletes who compete in the marathons receive points for finishing in any of the top five places (1st 25; 2nd 15; 3rd 10; 4th 5 and 5th 1). Their four highest ranks over the two-year period will be counted; if an athlete scores points in more than this number, the athlete’s four best races will be scored. To be eligible for the jackpot, an athlete must compete in at least one qualifying race in each calendar year of the series. Good luck to those who try it! I’ll continue to cheer you on from the stands. Oh and BTW, at the end of each WMM series the leading man and woman each win $500,000. Yeah.

First Thanksgiving in Florida?

The 1st Thanksgiving in Florida

Hmmm kinda.

According to Wikipedia:

The date and location of the first Thanksgiving celebration is a topic of modest contention. Though the earliest attested Thanksgiving celebration was on September 8, 1565 in what is now Saint Augustine, Florida, the traditional “first Thanksgiving” is venerated as having occurred at the site of Plymouth Plantation, in 1621.

People have been “giving thanks” with food and such for centuries. Celebrating harvest, safe arrivals, and those other things we should give thanks for like Al Gore and his Internet.

The US and Canada aren’t alone in this celebration. Thanksgiving is also celebrated in the Netherlands Hooglandse Kerk, and in Grenada.

Mind you we only started celebrating as a nation in 1776 after the defeat of the British at Saratoga. Up till then it us just a Puritan religious observation. The holiday was later made official by Abe Lincoln. He loves himself some Turducken.

It seems that this Deep South dish is now pretty mainstream and not just a fun sounding name like

christmahanukwanzaakah.

Turducken may have been inspired by another dish from England, Ballotine. Which takes a variety of meats, de-boned and stuffed in each other. Badaboom. So this thanksgiving, while your stuffing your face, and enjoying football, parades and shopping for Christmas WAY to early, take a moment and give thanks.
